Kurtz Puts Hurt on North Florida Sprints |
by Jon Harney
Another strong field of sprint cars took the opening green flag at North Florida Speedway. Scott Anderson took the initial lead but his moment in the limelight was short lived as Matt Kurtz blew past Anderson on the fourth lap and proceeded to dominate the field. Dakotah Stephens made progress from midpack to second as the race progressed. Stephens had a momentary chance at the lead on lap 15 when Kurtz had difficulties in traffic, but Stephens also encountered similar problems two circuits later. Kurtz proved to be the stronger in the closing laps and convincingly earned his third win at NFS in 2006. Stephens finished similarly uncontested for second while Greg Leonard needed last-lap heroics to overhaul Danny Jones for the third spot. Perry Caudell finished fifth behind Jones.

LAKE CITY, FL (8/7) - The Florida Sprint Car Association brought their thunder back to North Florida Speedway with a 25-lap main event. Scott Anderson became the first real contender when he gained the lead on the third lap.
While Anderson was enjoying his moment beneath the lights, a pair of teenagers were charging from the back of the starting lineup. Matt Kurtz and Dakotah Stephens, who have both earned victories at NFS in 2006, were making forward progress as they battled each other on the 3/8-mile oval.
Stephens emerged as the stronger of the two when he passed three cars on the eighth lap, assumed secong on lap ten, and successfully wrestled the lead from Anderson on the 13th circuit.
Allen Kaluzniak momentarily appeared to be a match for Stephens when he nabbed second one lap later, however, as the race wound down it was all Stephens as he won going away. Stephens' Ford-powered #79 was followed by Kaluzniak, Otto Scrape, Danny Jones, and Kurtz.

Scott Anderson Avoids The Big One to take First FSCA Victory
By Donna Kaluzniak
Nicholls, Georgia
Seventeen winged sprints took the field at the beautiful Douglas Motorsports Park clay track in Nicholls, Georgia on July 29, 2006?but many never finished the feature.
In Heat #1 Mark Ruel, Jr. started on the pole, with Larry Pickett on the outside. On the green, Larry Pickett took the lead followed by Scott Anderson. Mark Ruel, Jr. pulled off the track on lap two with mechanical problems. Pickett and Anderson battled for the lead, but Pickett held on to win the race, followed by Anderson. The final finish order was Larry Pickett, Scott Anderson, John Boyles, Dale Nettles, Perry Caudle, and Mark Ruel, Jr..
Heat #2 found Barry McCance on the pole with Allen Kaluzniak to his outside. Kaluzniak took the lead on lap one, followed by McCance and Bill Daugherty. Dan Pickett worked his way to 3rd position, but was passed by Gene Machuga. Machuga was fighting for second position when his engine blew and the car went up in flames, bringing out the red flag. Machuga was thankfully uninjured. Dan Pickett left the track with mechanical troubles. On the restart, Kaluzniak took first position again, with a large lead over the rest of the field. The final finish was Allen Kaluzniak, Barry McCance, Bill Daugherty, Dan Pickett and Gene Machuga.
Several cars had problems and missed Heat #3. Mike Love had the pole, and Brett Cole had the outside pole. On lap one, Mike Love took the lead, followed by Cole and Matt Kurtz. The three drivers changed position several times during the heat, Cole took the lead from Love, who was then passed by Matt Kurtz when Love fell off the pace with a flat tire. The final order for Heat #3 was Brett Cole, Matt Kurtz and Mike Love.
The sprints had a special Dash for Cash, with Mark Ruel, Jr. starting on the pole and John Byers to his outside. Bill Daugherty and Barry McCance worked their way from the back of the pack to take first and second place. The finish order was Bill Daugherty, Perry Caudle, John Byers and Barry McCance.
The Feature found Perry Caudle on the pole and John Byers beside him. Perry Caudle took the lead when the green flag flew, then was passed by Scott Anderson. Allen Kaluzniak worked his way from ninth position to third by lap three, when Mark Ruel, Jr. spun in turn four and had to be pushed off the track. On the restart, Scott Anderson took the lead again, followed by Caudle and Kaluzniak. Kaluzniak spun in turn four, but kept going. Larry Pickett left the track with car trouble. Tommy Denton made his way through the pack to take the lead from Anderson, and Cole took third place from Caudle. Denton kept the lead, followed by Anderson and Cole, with Kaluzniak working back to fourth position, and Dakotah Stephens in fifth position.
Halfway through the race, Barry McCance spun in turn two, with lapped traffic, leading to a six car pileup, and bringing out the second red flag of the evening. Bill Daugherty flipped onto the wing, Brett Cole's car was removed from the track with a forklift. Mike Love, Tommy Denton, and John Byers were all towed from the track. None of the drivers were injured but several cars sustained major damage. On the restart, Scott Anderson took the lead again and was able to hold off Al Kaluzniak and Dakotah Stephens to win the race. Dakota Stephens passed Kaluzniak for second place on the last lap. After the race, Kaluzniak found Bill Daugherty's rear bumper had been caught underneath his front end during the final 10 laps! The final finish for the feature was Scott Anderson, Dakota Stephens, Allen Kaluzniak, Dale Nettles, Perry Caudle, Barry McCance, Tommy Denton, Bill Daugherty, John Byers, Mike Love, Brett Cole, Matt Kurtz, Larry Pickett, Dan Pickett, and Mark Ruel, Jr.
Scott Anderson's win makes the 10th new feature winner for the Florida Sprint Car Association this season.

Mike Love #7 Winner at Putnam County Speedway on July 22, 2006 with Dakotah, 3rd place finisher behind Otto Scrape, wee#3
This race was the most fun of all. I know I finished 3 on the board but it felt like a victory. The close, wheel to wheel racing with Otto and Mike Love on the last 3 laps is why I choose Sprints as my race car of choice. And, from what I hear, the fans of Putnam County sure loved the show as well. |

Angel in the Pits
A big Thank You goes out to Hot Shoe #1 Bill Dargherty.
I never would have made the race without his crew chiefing and a little God-sent rain shower due to a malfunction in the gas filter. Big Bill and my dad used old school methods to get my car on the track tonight. Thanks Guys, You Are The BEST. |

 | Stephens Notches First Sprint Victory by Jon Harney
LAKE CITY, FL (7/1) - Eighteen sprint cars took the green flag for their feature at North Florida Speedway with Willie Jude leading the early session. Many of the faster cars were buried in the pack at the start, notably Dakotah Stephens and Otto Scrape. Both picked and pecked their way towards the front and were aided by numerous cautions which kept the pack close together. Stephens made his way to third on the tenth lap, then nabbed second three laps later. The 14-year-old Stephens quickly reeled Jude in, then hooked him on lap nineteen to go on to a runaway victory. Brett Cole nabbed second from Jude with three circuits to go to finish second. Jude was third ahead of Scrape and T.W. Parkinson. It was an impressive win for Stephens who charged from the rear of the field and earned the first of what may be many wins for this young man. |

This Sly Silver Fox takes me to driving school every week. |
Putnam County Speedway was a great dirt surface and my pit was filled with girls all evening. Krew Chief Kimberly, Stacy and Lynn hung out with our team all night. I started 16th and was able to get up to 4th until a slight bump sent me to the back of the pack again. But I kept digging to finish 5th after 20 laps of racing. A video of the race is available at http://www.pushinthecushin.com/.
See you at Lake City next Saturday night. I have to give up my NASCAR tickets in Daytona to make this show. (Good thing I did since at I got my first win in Sprints on this very night).

Green Flag---19th position
Checker Flag---8th position
I advanced 11 positions and wish I could say I passed 11 cars, but actually, I passed 5 cars on the low groved track. Our feature was also reduced to 15 laps for the second week in a row but, hey, "I live for those 15 laps" every week.
Congratulations to tonight's winner #32 Larry Pickett |
 | 11th Need I Say More! |
I finished 3rd in my heat race. Started 7th in the main feature and finished 13th at the checkers.
